But what is it?
It is an operating system(OS) such as leopard by mac or windows by microsoft. This OS is generally called GNU/linux.
Linux is huge, there is more than a hundred of different versions (called distributions) each of them being develloped by different users for different uses. Linux is open software therefore anyone can read the source code and modify it to fit one's will. There is an important community of developpers which enables linux distributions to evolve constantly to be at the top for free for the users.
What interest for you?
Borred of having to reinstall windows after having spywares, viruses,... , spending a fortune for antiviruses, spend a fortune to get the new version of every proprietary software?
Linux is done for you! There is no problems with security under linux, therefore you can forget all of these topics and enjoy using you're computer! To add on to this, this Oper ting system is excellent for recycling old computer as it requirs much less virtual memory (RAM) and therefore can run securely and quickly on old PCs

Which distribution should I choose?
The most interesting distributions for linux users are:
Ubuntu (downloadable here:

Kubuntu (Ubuntu with another graphic interface)
OpenSuse (http://software.opensuse.org/
choose pc 32bits , version CD , bittorent et live cd gnome or kde au choixup to you to choose)
I would advise you to consider opensuse as a best choice as it has a comfortable user interface unlike ubuntu.
If you're scared of leaving windows right now, you can use the live version CDs of these distributions in order to make yourself you're own opinion without touching to the current configration of you're computer.

Azureus Vuze: It is a bittorent client which enables you to download legal and interesting videos (http://www.vuze.com/app)

Openoffice.org: It is an office suite which is compatible with the microsoft office format and many others which is totally free.

Mozilla Firefox: It's a free intenet navigator way better than internet explorer. (downloadable here , just get the aero fox theme or any other theme which you like and have you're personalizes navigator!)
There is many other projects but I do not know all of them and will therefore present any valuable software I encounter. Do not hesitate presenting me a software which you think diserves it's place here.
